Anna Tilstra, 92, of Luverne, Minnesota, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2020, at Good Samaritan Society-Mary Jane Brown Home in Luverne.

Anna Bouwman was born Jan. 16, 1928, near Alvord, Iowa, to William and Hendrika (Boon) Bouwman. She grew up near Alvord and Lester and graduated from Lester High School in 1946. During high school, she worked at Rock Rapids Hotel and Van’s Grocery in Rock Rapids, Iowa. She attended teacher’s training at Morningside Teacher’s College in Iowa. Her first teaching job was at Midland School #6 in Lyon County, Iowa.
On Dec. 28, 1948, she married Fred Tilstra. They farmed near Hills, Minnesota, one year then moved to a farm north of Rock Rapids. She taught school at a Lyon County country school, then at Hills Christian School. In 1956, the family moved to farm near Luverne. In the 1980s, she began working as a clerk at Montgomery Ward in Rock Rapids. The couple retired from farming in 1991. They moved into Luverne in August 2006. Her husband passed away in 2008. In 2016 she became a resident at Prairie Creek Memory Care in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, for a couple years, then transitioned to the Good Samaritan Society-Mary Jane Brown Home in Luverne.
Survivors include her children, Harold (Mary) Tilstra of Prior Lake, Minnesota, Karen (Craig) Rollag of Beaver Creek, Minnesota, and Luanne Tilstra (Phillip Smith) of Terra Haute, Indiana; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; brothers, Walter (Joan) Bouwman of Artesia, California, A. James (Esther) Bouwman of Rock Valley, Iowa, William (Carol) Bouwman of Rock Valley and John (Paula) Bouwman of Fredericksburg, Texas; sisters, Edith (Alvin) Hoogendorn of Sioux Falls and Angela Faber of Sioux Falls; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, an infant and Wayne Tilstra; brothers, Edward Bouwman and Henry Bouwman, and her sisters, Annetta Wiese and Martina Vanden Brink.
