CLEGHORN-George-Little Rock/Central Lyon scored five runs early but couldn’t hold the lead and lost 8-5 to Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn/Remsen Union Tuesday, June 26, in a non-conference softball game in Cleghorn.
The Mustangs scored one run in the first inning and the Royals responded with one of their own in the bottom of the first. George-Little Rock/Central Lyon then scored four runs in the second inning to take the lead back. In that second inning, Makayla Witt drove in the first run with an RBI double that scored Nikki Bloemendaal. Brecken Boekhout also doubled and she drove in two RBIs, the runners being Michealla Johnson and Kayla Gerken. Elyse Pedersen drove in the final run for the Mustangs on an RBI single that scored Witt. Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn/Remsen Union scored once in the bottom of the second, once in the bottom of the third and then took the lead for good with five runs in the bottom of the fifth.
“We didn’t play bad, they (MMC/RU) just were ‘on’ last night. We didn’t really do anything wrong they just played a really good game last night,” said George-Little Rock/Central Lyon coach Jeff Jager.
Overall on offense, Witt had a double, one run scored and an RBI. Boekhout had two doubles, a run scored and three RBIs. Gerken scored two runs and stole a base. Wynona Steenhoven had a hit and a stolen base. Pedersen had a hit, a stolen base and an RBI. Hayden Heimensen had a hit. Bloemendaal had two hits and a run scored. Johnson also added two hits.
The Mustangs just couldn’t get any runs across after the second inning.
“We couldn’t string anything together. We had a few opportunities here and there but we couldn’t get that big hit to break it open,” coach Jager said.
Madilyn Matuska was in the pitcher’s circle. She pitched six innings, allowed 13 hits, eight runs of which six were earned, two walks and had no strikeouts.

GEORGE-It was a good senior night for the George-Little Rock/Central Lyon softball team as it scored three runs in the fifth inning to defeat rival West Lyon in a Siouxland Conference softball game Wednesday, June 27, in George.
In that fifth inning, Kayla Gerken scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch. The Mustangs then added two more runs; one on an RBI single by Wynona Steenhoven that scored Brecken Boekhout with Steenhoven then scoring the third run on an RBI single by Elyse Pedersen. Madilyn Matuska was in the pitcher’s circle for the Mustangs. She pitched all seven innings, allowed seven hits, no runs, one walk and had two strikeouts.
“That was about as well of a played game as you can ask for,” said George-Little Rock/Central Lyon coach Jeff Jager. “Madilyn was on it tonight. Hitting her spots, keeping the ball down and had her drop-ball working. The girls played outstanding defense behind her. If we play like that, we can play with a lot of teams.”
Overall on offense, Gerken drew a walk and scored. Makayla Witt had a hit and drew a walk. Boekhout scored a run. Steenhoven had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Pedersen had two hits and an RBI. Bailey Herman and Hayden Heimensen each had a single.
“We did just enough. Girls ran the bases well and had some key hits. Elyse and Wynona had key RBIs,” Jager said.
Mustangs fail to get much going

BOYDEN-George-Little Rock/Central Lyon only notched two hits and couldn’t get any runs in a 10-0 loss to Class 3A eight-ranked Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley in a Siouxland Conference softball game Thursday, June 28, in Boyden.
The only two hits for the Mustangs came from Wynona Steenhoven and Brecken Boekhout. Both of the hits were singles.
“We just played good. It’s just that we played a good team that played a good game,” said Mustangs’ coach Jeff Jager. “I liked our girls’ approaches at the plate, I liked our timing but a little bit of our form was off. Their defense is good and Kaitlyn (Van Der Zwaag) is as good as it gets.”
Madilyn Matuska was in the pitcher’s circle for the Mustangs. She went five and one-third innings, allowed 12 hits, 10 runs of which nine were earned, five walks and no strikeouts.
George-Little Rock/Central Lyon played in a Class 3A Region 1 tournament game at Sioux Center Tuesday, July 3 at 7 pm.
“We’re ready to go. We’re excited. I feel very good going into the playoffs,” Jager said. “We’ve got such great senior leaders and great juniors. We’re playing pretty well and I feel like we are ready for them. They are very good and we are going to have to play a good game in order to beat them, but we’re excited for the opportunity to go and knock off a once-ranked team.”
