Leona Bogaard, 104 of Sibley, Iowa, died, Sunday, June 28, 2020, at her daughter’s home in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Prayer service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 11, at Jurrens Funeral Home, Sibley, with graveside services following at Holman Township Cemetery, Sibley.
Leona Jeanette Struyk was born Jan. 13, 1916, near Melvin, Iowa, to John and Lydia (Steenhoven) Struyk. She attended Melvin Consolidated Schools and graduated in 1934.
On Nov. 18, 1937, she married Richard Bogaard. They farmed near Sheldon, Iowa. By October 1960, they had moved to Ackley, Iowa, where they owned Bogaard Lumber Yard. In 1968 they moved to Seattle, Washington. In 1979 they returned to Iowa and lived in Little Rock and Sibley. Her husband passed away in 2005. In 2009 she moved to Trail Ridge Retirement Village in Sioux Falls. In 2019, she moved to Dow Rummel Village Nursing Facility in Sioux Falls. In May 2020 she moved in with her daughter.
Survivors include her children, Richard (Nancy) Bogaard of Sioux Falls, Donna (Dean) Shelly of Rock Rapids, Iowa, Linda (Meint) Huesman of Key Largo, Florida, Letha (James) Huntsperger of Mill Creek, Washington, and Beth (Brian) DeRuyter of Sioux Falls; 11 children; 13 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Mavis Struyk of Perry, Iowa, Leone Vande Woude of Coralville, Iowa, and Norma (Roger) Gintert of Santa Cruz, California; brother-in-law, Calvin Bogaard of Sugarland, Texas, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a stillborn daughter, Mary; her parents; four brothers, Arie (Jen), Pete (Dorothy), Burt (Elsie) and John and two sisters, Cora (Frank) Juber and Nellie (Pete) Van Aalsburg.
