Joseph Herda, 85, of Orange City, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2020, at Happy Siesta Care Center in Remsen, Iowa.
No public services are planned. Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City is assisting the family.
Joseph Thomas was born Dec. 19, 1934, in Brocket, North Dakota, son of Joseph Frank and Albina (Bina) Herda. He was raised in Brocket where he attended school before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1953 and serving in the Army Reserves until 1956.
On July 25, 1956, he married Ailene Mae Heidebrink. They made their home in Rock Rapids where he worked for Central Natural Gas, owned and operated Herda Dray Service, and eventually started working for K-Products in Rock Rapids. In 1980, the family moved to Orange City where he was employed as the maintenance supervisor for K-Products in Orange City. Following his retirement in 1996, the couple moved to Missouri where they lived from 1997-2001, when they moved to Hospers, Iowa, and then to Orange City in 2018.
Survivors include his wife; four children, Doug (Linda) Herda of Rock Rapids, Mark (Melinda) Herda of Spencer, Lori (Dave) Mars of Orange City, Iowa, and Peggy (Brian) Bursch of Buffalo, Minnesota; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Richardson of Alton, Iowa; 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and step-father, Frank Miller, he was preceded in death by a son, David Herda, two great-grandsons and his siblings, Frank Herda, Florence Peterson, Margaret Evenson, Floyd Herda, John Herda and Albina Evenson.
