On Monday, June 18, George Fire and Rescue and Iowa Department of Natural Resources responded to an accident and diesel spill near Marsh Avenue and A-34, five and one-half miles east of George. Less than 100 gallons of diesel fuel seeped from the semi’s fuel tank onto the road; however, heavy rains washed some of the diesel into Whitney Creek, a tributary of Little Rock and Rock rivers.
First on the scene was George Fire and Rescue, which applied absorbent on the road. When the department of natural resources arrived on the scene, an oil absorbent used on bodies of water, was deployed over the tributary. The large amounts of rain received recently is making it difficult to contain the situation. There has been no further word from the department of natural resources concerning the situation but they are continuing to monitor the situation.
