In September 1873, the Lyon County Agricultural Society sponsored the first ever fair in Lyon County. According to historical records, the fair featured agricultural displays, horse races and a plowing match.
Fast forward 125 years to the 2018 Lyon County Fair which wrapped up last week. Visitors to the fair enjoyed agricultural displays as fairgoers did in 1873 but also took in commercial booths, 4-H and FFA livestock shows, 4-H and open class exhibits, races, entertainment, a variety of food, a cruise-in and tractor show and much more.
The crowning of a Lyon County Fair queen is a tradition that was begun in 1971. During the 2018 queen contest Monday, July 17, some of the prior queens were recognized at intermission. The 2018 Miss Lester, Erica Kellenberger, was crowned Miss Lyon County. Miss Rock Rapids, Noelle McCarthy, was named first runnerup.
The annual Friend of the Fair presentation was also made during intermission of the queen contest. Rick Kiers was presented a plaque and thanked for his many hours working behind the scene at the fair, his willingness to troubleshoot a problem at a moment’s notice and for doing it with a smile.
